Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine

Being diagnosed with cancer is initially a shock – time-consuming examinations and strenuous treatments are often started even before the patient had enough time to digest the diagnosis. The Department of Hematology and Oncology at Klinik Dorfen provides a major contribution to helping patients and their relatives overcome these difficult times.

The establishment of this department at Klinik Dorfen has made it possible to ensure high-quality, local medical care that is tailored to the individual needs of cancer patients. The department’s main focus is not only on the application of the latest medical standards, but, most importantly, the provision of emotional support to patients and their relatives. This also includes enabling them to spend as much time at home as possible.

Owing to the department’s close association with the RetiMed Medical Care Center headed by Prof. Dr. Folke Schriever, the majority of examinations and chemotherapies can be performed on an outpatient basis. An inpatient stay only becomes necessary if this is absolutely required due to the progression of the disease. In addition, chemotherapies that are not possible in the outpatient area can be performed here. The close collaboration of the department with local general practitioners and specialists makes it possible to keep the patients’ duration of stay as short as possible. The cooperation with the in-house medical team allows for providing medical care to the patients in all fields of internal medicine. Patients with specific needs are additionally taken care of by the great number of specialists at Klinikum Erding.

The close association with the tumor conference attended by specialists from Erding and nearby hospitals guarantees interdisciplinary recommendations for the treatment of cancer patients. Regular training of the nursing staff ensures that cancer patients are provided the highest level of nursing and medical care. The direct connection to the Short-Term Care Unit at Klinik Dorfen and the close collaboration with Christophorus Hospizverein Erding e.V. and the Erding SAPV team [Special Outpatient Palliative Care] ensure smooth transfer of patients from inpatient to outpatient care – involving as little stress as possible for them and their relatives.
